## Neighborhood description
**La Macarena**
Your historical, central home

**Overview**
Are you looking for the real Seville?

Welcome to La Macarena. It’s one of the most populated areas in the city. But somehow it feels like a village. Perhaps because it’s working class, understated, and fuss free.

La Macarena was a no-go zone until not so long ago. Today it's one of the best places to live in Seville. Talk about rags-to-relative-riches.

But while La Macarena may be authentic, it's not immune to gentrification. Say hello to alternative bars, art galleries, and concept stores.

One of Spain’s national treasures lives here. Her name is Macarena, the Virgin of Hope. She's a 17th-century wooden sculpture. You'll find her in the Basílica de la Macarena.

Once per year, she makes an outing for the Semana Santa processions. Tears are shed, songs are sung. They really love her here in Seville.

The old city walls are here too. Seville’s medieval past is all around you.

**What can I do here?**
Can you smell seafood, olive oil and cured ham? It's coming from the restaurants selling typical Spanish food at delicious prices. Get stuck in, that’s our recommendation.

Macarena is home to several markets. Your best bet is El Jueves market, on Calle Feria. It's the oldest operating market in Europe. As you might have guessed, it takes place every Thursday.

Climb to the Torre de los Perdigones for a panoramic view of Seville. Have a look at the Camera Obscura. If you want a view of the city while sitting down, there are also plenty of rooftop bars.

In summer, temperatures can soar into the 40s. You'll be glad to know that lush, 85-acre Alamillo Park is nearby. Lot’s of grassy areas, shady trees, lakes, and waterfowl for you to enjoy.

**Fun fact**
The Macarena Virgin has seen a lot in her time. According to legend, a Protestant rebel once threw a bottle of wine at her face. The incident left a bruise-like mark on her cheek that reappears every time it's removed. Memory.
